Sciatica Pain or Is It?
Sciatica is a common diagnosis these days for which pain is coming from the area of the low back or buttocks down to the leg. In some severe cases, the pain can be a debilitating condition but by no means a hopeless situation where surgery is the only answer. The word "sciatica" is actually a nerve supposedly pinched or trapped in this condition but about half of the cases diagnosed to be as such does not even involve the sciatica nerve. In most of these misdiagnosed cases, the culprit is muscle imbalance where the muscles of one side of the body are weak and the opposite side are tight. This creates skeletal misalignment causing discomfort and in some cases debilitating pain. A good and careful physical assessment can accurately pinpoint the skeletal asymmetry and easily strengthen the weak muscles and loosen the tight ones restoring musculoskeletal balance without any unnecessary invasive procedure.

Does Reflexology Actually Work?
Reflexology, in a nutshell, is the practice of applying pressure to the feet, hands, ears, etc. in order to relieve pain in other parts of the body. For example, rubbing a certain area of the foot is known to help relieve back pain, chest pain, stomach aches etc. The areas massaged are set up into zones that correspond with other parts of the body and organs.
Have you ever had a foot massage after a long days work, and afterward felt better throughout your body? You probably just thought that being on your feet all day translated to achy feet which were the main problem as to why you were so tired. Reflexology has been studied, and agreed upon by those who practice it that it does offer significant improvement in pain. The body is a very complex being, and not everything is as upfront as most people want to believe.
In reflexology the body anatomy is laid out on the foot similar to how it is on the whole body. The left foot represents the left portion of the body while the right foot represents the right portion. By stimulating certain nerves on the foot, you are able to stimulate the corresponding area of the body for pain relief. The benefits of reflexology are still being uncovered, as different techniques are developed and practiced, the field of reflexology is predicted to grow in the near future, becoming a respected for of massage therapy.
Tai Chi anyone?
On April 16, 2011 I conducted a Tai Chi demonstration for the Philippine Nurses Association of Central Florida teaching proper posture and body mechanics that can be applied when lifting patients and other work related physical activity. Tai Chi also promote relaxation, lower blood pressure, improve hand - eye coordination, maximize lung function and relieve back pain. If you want a free demonstration for your group or organization, contact Wendell at 407-346-0506.
